Rothenstein is a municipality in the south of the Saale-Holzland district of Thuringia and part of the Südliches Saaletal administrative community. The settlement of "Rodostein", situated on the striking, steeply rising Trompeterfelsen rock, was first mentioned in 786. The predominant red sandstone layers here gave it its name.
