The most beautiful wine view 2020

Geiseltalsee near Mücheln

"From mining to viticulture" has been the motto at Geiseltalsee since the beginning of 2000. In the former open-cast mine of Mücheln and Braunsbedra, the hobby vintner Rolf Reifert came up with the idea of growing wine there in 1997. This project, which is unique in Europe, was put into action three years later with a lot of effort and dedication.

Since then, the wine varieties Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Mitos and Traminer have been growing here on approx. 3.6 hectares of recultivated land, which also prompted the German Wine Institute (DWI) to award the Geiseltalsee the title of "Most Beautiful Wine View 2020". The water reflects the sun, stores the heat during the day and releases it back into the slope at night.

Today, the Geiseltalsee is filled to its intended level and offers the wine grown up to now the desired sun reflection, which gives the fine wines in the Saale-Unstrut growing region an unmistakable quality.

The "Most Beautiful Wine View" is awarded to vantage points that offer particularly spectacular views of the German wine landscape, such as impressive views of river valleys or castles nestled in vineyards.

The project aims to create new wine tourism destinations in the wine regions that invite visitors to visit the wine regions and enjoy the wines. The award-winning viewpoints are excellent starting points for nature-loving wine lovers who like to explore the wine regions on foot or by bike.
