Droyßig castle
Droyßig castle
Droyßig Castle has its origins in a medieval castle complex, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century to secure an important road junction. The oldest parts of the castle church date back to this time. After the castle changed hands several times, it was acquired by the von Hoym family, who had it redesigned as a residential castle at the beginning of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 13th century, the imposing castle was built by crusaders who brought with them experience in castle building from the Orient. Today, this unique structure for the German region is still almost completely preserved. Surrounded by a moat, a circular double ring of walls rose from which six high, narrow and elongated semicircular towers jutted out at regular intervals, while in the center of the complex a round keep stood out, providing a wide view.
In the castle there is a gastronomy with regional specialties.
Brown bears have been kept in Droyßig since 1870. Visit the bears Aiko and Toni in the castle complex.
