Wethautal

Cycling and hiking paradise
The Wethautal - the idyllic stretch of land from the moorland, over the Molauer Platte, to the mouth of the Wethau into the Saale near Schönburg - is ideal for discovery tours. Excursionists get their money's worth both on foot and by bike and can explore and marvel at the wealth of tourist attractions. Several sections of the "Rad-Acht", which connects the Saale, Unstrut and Elster cycle paths, lead through the Wethautal.
Enjoy the charming landscapes on your tours: get to know the new cycle path between Zeitz and Camburg, which uses the disused railroad line of the former "Zuckerbahn" and is ideal for families because of its even gradient. Since 2011, this path has been continuously expanded and leads in the Wethautal from Weickelsdorf via Osterfeld and Cauerwitz to Schkölen in Thuringia. In the coming years, it will then continue from there via Molau to its actual destination of Camburg.
Or take a closer look at the old mills on the Wethau. The mill cycle path takes you from Osterfeld through Löbitz and then further along the stream through Mertendorf to the mouth of the Saale just before Schönburg.
Good things from home - regional products from the Wethautal region
Giving consumers the opportunity to trace the origin of goods and to learn about production methods and processes - that is the concern of direct marketers in the Wethautal region, who offer a wealth of diverse products for sale via direct and short routes.
Tasty, fresh and homemade products as well as not least the special atmosphere during the shopping experience find more and more appreciation. On your tour through the Wethautal, visit the Grüne Hof in Löbitz. True to the motto "live naturally - eat healthily", here you can get meat and sausage products from tradition and many years of experience. Every step of the process is carried out by the family business itself and can therefore guarantee quality and freshness. Special recipes, natural ingredients and spices also ensure the delicious taste.
Other suppliers of regional products in the Wethautal include "Kathrins Hofladen" in Oberkaka, the "Alte Bäckerei" in Schönburg or the Schlegel bakery in Waldau.
Places of interest in the municipality
Gieckau - the village is very popular mainly due to three attractions: Firstly, the Gieckau equestrian center exists here, which has an indoor riding arena and a riding arena. Whether riding in the surrounding area or on the grounds, after such a riding experience is definitely worth the stop in the beautifully restored country inn of the village. There, culinary delights of German and also regional cuisine await the discerning palate. For younger guests there is also a generously equipped adventure playground and a petting zoo. In the beer garden season there is also the possibility to enjoy the stay outside. And for those who would like to stay a little longer, the nearby Hotel Falkenhof certainly still offers a free bed in the middle of meadows and forests.
Osterfeld - the town with the "Matzturm" exudes its very own charm. The town, which was already mentioned in a document in 1198, impresses with numerous sights. The castle grounds located high above the town are the center of attraction. There was already a Slavic rampart castle here in the 6th century, and in the 11th and 12th centuries the castle complex was massively expanded. The surrounding walls and the remains of the ramparts in the adjacent Hayn are still preserved today. Another striking feature is the old keep, popularly known as the "Matzturm". The idyllically situated natural swimming pool, which was completely restored a few years ago, attracts numerous bathers in the summer - then a visit to the ice cream parlor "Blaue Blume" with delicious and ice-cold treats is also recommended.
Schönburg - 40 meters above the Saale River, perched on a sandstone cliff, is a castle complex that gave its name to the village below the medieval structure: Schönburg. The 32 meter high keep with its beautiful fireplace in the tower chamber and the guardroom at the top of the tower are particularly worth seeing. At the foot of the Schönburg, excursions to the castle and the surrounding area can be started: A landing stage for boats, a camping site, cycling and hiking trails around Schönburg meet here. For tired hikers there is a café and a pastry shop as well as enough gastronomic places and overnight accommodations in the village. In addition, discover the beauties of nature through a small window of the earth's history on the 1.5 km long geological trail, which is laid out as a circular hiking trail. The trail begins at the parking lot at the entrance to Naumburg and leads you through the village past the castle and the vineyard. Five educational panels cover topics such as red sandstone, wine, spring water and Schönburg rocks.
Sieglitz - the small village offers several excursion destinations: On the one hand, a Dutch windmill that produced flour until the 1950s, and on the other, "Heino's Rarities Cabinet," which showcases numerous nostalgic exhibits from long-forgotten times. The operator Heino Kirbst also organizes the annual classic car meeting, which is well-known and popular far beyond the region. Throughout the year, the rustic festival barn also delights with numerous cultural events.
