The tower of Naumburg's civic church of St. Wenceslas has been part of the city's property since time immemorial, because the church tower was also the city's most important watchtower. The watchmen had the task of ringing the bells and keeping a lookout day and night for fire - in times of war also for enemy troops. Renovated from 1991 to 2001, it was reopened to the public in May 2001. 202 steps lead up to the tower - whereby both the mechanical clockwork and the belfry with its triple chimes from 1518 offer welcome interruptions during the ascent. The turret's apartment and the lantern above offer a grand view over Naumburg's old town. Exhibition panels provide information about the life and duties of the former stewards of the Naumburg City Church of St. Wenceslas.
