The Elsterfloßgraben in Nempitz is a small idyll and technical monument, which should revive the tradition of rafting.
In the years 1578 to 1580, Elector August I of Saxony had a raft ditch constructed to enable timber rafting. The wood transported in this way was specifically used to fire boiling pans in order to process brine into table salt. With a total length of approx. 93 km, of which more than 80 km still exist, the supra-regionally important engineering structure represents the most important canal system of the 16th century on the European continent.
