The unique collection of the German Optical Museum houses around 20,000 objects, from cameras and microscopes to the largest collection of eyeglasses in the world.
The collection of the German Optical Museum is world-class. In order to explain optical phenomena in a comprehensible way in the future and to attractively showcase important exhibits, the museum has been undergoing reconstruction since July 2019. When it reopens, which is planned for 2023, Jena will have an impressive "showcase of optics research". Objects will be shown in their context, the basics of optics will be explained in a playful way, and the latest research results will be presented in a generally understandable way. If this is still too technical for you, you can enjoy the aesthetics of the objects. Glasses of famous personalities are on display in the museum, for example those of Rudolf Virchow, Robert Koch and Helmut Kohl. In addition, there are magnificent microscopes, jewelry telescopes, smoky quartz glasses or diamond-studded lorgnettes to admire. The diverse collection holds interesting topics for every visitor. A visit with the whole family is also a good idea. Interactive exhibits with a high learning effect inspire adults, students and children for optics. The Carl Zeiss workshop will be on display in its original context as a typical optician's workshop of the time.
