The "Goetz Cave" nestles gently against the legendary Dietrichsberg in Meiningen. Even on the short climb to the cave entrance, visitors are rewarded with a fantastic view over the town and the surrounding countryside. Discovered in 1915 by the merchant Reinhold Goetz, the laborious development of the cave took around 19 years until it was opened to visitors in April 1934. With fissures and crevices up to 50 meters high and a depth of 500 meters, it is the largest accessible fissure and crevice cave in Europe. The healthy dust- and pollen-free air refreshes the body and soul at a constant 8 degrees Celsius.
