St. Wigbert's Priory is an ecumenical Benedictine monastery under the umbrella of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia. St. Wigbert's Church in Werningshausen was built in 1750, but there was already a church or chapel on this site many hundreds of years earlier. Saint Boniface and Saint Wigbert Christianized this area in the 8th century. The church tower in its present form was not erected until 1843. In 1987, the small community of Sankt Wigberti was approved by the Evangelical Lutheran Church under Bishop Dr. W. Leich, which opened the way to monastic life. The construction of the monastery of St. Wigberti began in 1989 and the first section of the small monastery was consecrated in 1992. An extension was added in 1999/2000.

Visitors are (almost) always free to visit the church and St. Mary's Chapel. They are usually open daily from 09:00 to approx. 18:00, 365 days a year. You are also welcome to attend morning prayers (Lauds) and church services. No registration is required.

The monastery is located directly on the Unstrut cycle path. Cyclists can take a break in the church and church park.

On most weekdays and weekends from May to October, the monks offer the opportunity to refresh yourself with drinks for a donation. Look out for the sign in front of the church. This will show you whether the monastery gate is manned.

If a bike breaks down, the brothers at the monastery are happy to help wherever possible. "We are not a designated bike service, but our well-equipped workshop has helped many a lame bike back on its feet."
