Fountain at the house of Mrs. von Stein
Fountain at the house of Mrs. von Stein
This image is often repeated in Weimar: an oval fountain basin with a free-standing fountain column. Originally, this fountain was located on Wielandplatz. In 1847, Duchess Maria Pavlovna had the architect Carl Dornberger make the fountain, later it was moved to its current location. Characteristic features are a richly decorated fountain column with grimace-like gargoyles, dolphins and sea leaves. At the upper end, a shallow bowl forms the finial. The duchess donated a total of six fountains to the city of Weimar as a gift. Her initials are carved into the stone.
