A home for more than 60 people of different generations 
The history of Tonndorf Castle dates back to medieval times. In addition to the so-called younger manor castle, an early medieval complex with remains of fortifications has been identified in the area of the castle. Historians assume that the castle, which was expanded into a palace during the Renaissance, was built to protect the old trade route as early as the time of Henry I during the truce with Hungary (924-933).
"catro Tontdorff" - the center of power
For centuries, "catro Tontdorff" was the center of power for the surrounding villages. The castle was first mentioned in a document of the Paulinzella monastery in 1201. In 1448, Bohemian mercenaries stayed at the castle during the Thuringian fratricidal war and caused serious damage.
Tonndorf Castle owned by a cooperative
Since August 2005, the castle has been owned by the registered "Genossenschaft auf Schloss Tonndorf e.G.". Around 60 people have been living, working and learning here since then, including around 25 children. 
Among other things, they operate:
- a castle apiary
- Sustainable dairy farming with production of own products
- castle catering and a welcoming cultural café
- integrative day care for people with mental illnesses and mental disabilities

- Sustainability 
All products made on site can be purchased in the culture café. Tonndorf Castle also regularly hosts music, theater and other cultural events.
