The Jewish cemetery in Weimar was established in 1774 on the private initiative of the Jewish banker Jakob Elkan. During the reign of Anna Amalia, several Jewish families settled in Weimar - Elkan was appointed a privileged "court Jew". Once almost 900 square meters in size, the cemetery now covers 200 square meters. The last burial took place in 1890. In the following years, most of the stones and parts of the surrounding wall were removed. Today, the small site with its partly weathered and damaged Hebrew lettering is designated as a cultural monument.
