The town church in Themar is dedicated to St. Bartholomew. It is one of the most richly decorated churches in the upper Werra valley. It is one of the few buildings in the small town on the Werra, which has a history dating back to 796, that has survived all the storms of time.
The upper church at the upper gate and the lower church on the Werra were the first places of worship in the village. Remains of the Romanesque lower church can still be seen in the sacristy and the two lower floors of the church tower above.
