Mountain Museum Markt-Höhler
Mountain Museum Markt-Höhler
The special excursion destination in Thuringia and German history worth seeing with "Glück auf!" is the Berg-Erlebnis Markt Höhler in Bad Lobenstein/Thuringia. Here you can learn all about beer storage, rocks, minerals and mining in Lobenstein. Here you can really get to grips with unadulterated German history with "Glück auf! The Markt Höhler was once the largest beer rock cellar in Lobenstein and is located directly in the town center of Bad Lobenstein, not far from the market square.
Starting in 1780, miners worked for many years to excavate a 54.45 meter long tunnel and 20 large chambers from the rock of the Schlossberg. There, the beer wort boiled in the town's breweries was filled into the oak barrels standing in the rock domes, fermented into beer and stored in a cool place together with the ice from the town pond.
After the storage of beer in the caves was gradually pushed back by the introduction of mechanical cooling of beer at the end of the 19th century (Linde's refrigeration apparatus), these rooms were still used for a while to store food, home-made berry wine and preserves in a cool place.
During the Second World War, the Markt Höhler was also used as a temporary air raid shelter for a short period. After the end of the war, the rooms were only used for the convenient disposal of garbage, waste, garbage, ash and unusable coal breeze.
The walls of the underground rooms, with their unusual rock structures in the Frauenbach layers, tell of the formation of the rocks in our region millions of years ago. A mining museum has been set up in the deepest caves in memory of the former iron ore mining in the old mining district of Lobenstein-Hirschberg. Here, visitors' children can try their hand at working the rock with historic tools such as mallets and irons, just like the miners of old.
Guided tours through the Markt-Höhler are a delight for young and old alike. In the Markt-Höhler, you can learn all about the rare combination of historical beer storage, mining skills and geology.
