Carl Alexander Bridge

It forms the impressive gateway to the town of Dornburg-Camburg and the Saale valley: the Carl Alexander Bridge.

The 126-metre-long riveted steel bridge was built in 1892 after the previous house bridge fell victim to a flood. It is named after the then prevailing Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

The three steel lattice arches are considered a masterpiece of engineering. In the final days of the Second World War, the western section of the bridge was blown up, but was repaired the following year. Nevertheless, the ravages of time took their toll on the bridge.

In 2012, the city council therefore decided to preserve this special technical monument. With the support of the Free State of Thuringia, the city's own funds and donations from the Carl-Alexander-Brückenverein e.V. the bridge was unveiled and reopened on 26.08.2020 after two years of restoration.

The former traffic bridge now offers pedestrians and cyclists a safe passage and magnificent views over the Saale. A staircase in the middle of the bridge provides access to an island on the Saale, which also invites boaters to linger.
