Baroque castle garden Ebeleben

The castle garden in Ebeleben, not far from Sondershausen, is a hidden gem of garden architecture. Its roots go back to the year 1616. At that time, a medieval castle of the Counts and later Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen stood there. When the castle was converted into a palace in the 1770s, the construction of a baroque garden in the French style began, the basic form of which has been preserved to this day. The gardens flourished at the end of the 18th century and in the first half of the 19th century. The princely family used the palace until 1835, later it had administrative functions and rented apartments were set up there. The garden was hardly appreciated or maintained during this time, but as a result its baroque features remained almost unchanged. During the Second World War, the castle was shelled, burnt out and then demolished. It was not until the 1990s that the palace garden was "rediscovered" and lovingly restored with its fascinating water features and impressive stone figures. A support association has also been working for many years to preserve this special garden. The freely accessible castle garden in Ebeleben was an outdoor location for the 2021 Federal Garden Show in Erfurt.
