Devil's Bridge in Altenstein Castle Park
Devil's Bridge in Altenstein Castle Park
The Devil's Bridge was built in 1800 and was an allusion to daring alpine bridge constructions. In keeping with the genre, it was executed as a "wild" wooden bridge made of two raw, unpeeled oak logs with inlaid wooden planks with a railing of billets and branches. As early as 1818, the rigid wooden bridge was replaced by a suspension bridge supported on chains. It did not have a railing. In keeping with the sentimental mood of the entire park, stepping on this bridge was meant to create eerie feelings. In 1918, the second Devil's Bridge was destroyed and was rebuilt only in 2009, but now as a chain bridge with railings. Over its swaying planks one reaches a worked rock plateau. From there you have a "magnificent view" to Altenstein Castle and the Pleasureground.
