Historic town hall Ostheim vor der Rhön

The historic town hall was purchased as an "old house" after being granted market rights in 1586 and thoroughly rebuilt. The state-owned half-timbered building was accessed via the striking flight of steps. In the two small rooms below, the "fool's houses", miscreants used to be locked up. Outside, there were neck irons and pillories.

The carillon in the town hall tower rings out every day

11.01 a.m. - 3.01 p.m. - 6.01 p.m.

The performance begins with the striking of the hour. This is followed by a short sequence of notes as an announcement of the actual melody. The repertoire of the bells ranges from the Rhönlied to the Frankenlied and melodies by the Rhön Baroque composer Valentin Rathgeber.

On Sundays and public holidays, choral music can be heard at the beginning of the day.

The bells were cast in the royal foundry in the Netherlands. They have been ringing on the Ostheim town hall tower since 1999 and are played by an automatic chime system with electric controls. They were financed by donations from the people of Ostheim. The initiators were the Ostheim couple Ingrid and Gerhard Schmidt.
