Wespenstein Castle
Wespenstein Castle
Located on a rocky outcrop high above the town of Gräfenthal, the castle was built in the 13th century as a fortress by the Counts of Orlamünde. It later came into the possession of the Imperial Hereditary Marshals of Pappenheim, who expanded it into a stately castle in the 16th century. Martin Luther preached in the castle chapel on April 13, 1530. An exhibition about Luther, Melanchthon and other guests during the Reformation is currently being prepared. By appointment, the lord of the castle will personally guide visitors through the museum on the castle's history, archaeological excavations and traditional costumes and handicrafts from grandma's time. The castle has its own beer garden, a castle restaurant and a guesthouse with double rooms and vacation apartments. As a special highlight, you can ride a trolley on the disused Max and Moritz railroad line near the castle. The castle chapel is available for weddings.
There is also a hotel area in the castle. Overnight stays in the medieval walls are possible in the tent camp.
Guided tours take place at the weekend on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 pm.
