Lookout "Schlehenblick"
Lookout "Schlehenblick"
The "Schlehenblick" lookout was built in 2017. It provides a wide view over shooting ranges no. 3 to 5 of the former Weberstedt military training area.
The development of the shooting ranges began in 1964, when they were needed for the motorized rifle division of the National People's Army of the GDR. 1965 saw the first shooting. The range was actively used for military exercises until 1995 and grazed with sheep until 1998. Since then, it has not been used and the area has been continuously changing, known scientifically as "succession" (Latin succedere: to succeed). This refers to the natural succession of plant, animal and fungal communities at a site following a disturbance. In order to document the succession sequence on this large area, photos have been taken at various photo points since 2000, which are impressively presented on the lookout in a series of images. The first of these photos, taken in 2000, shows short-grass vegetation with individual shrubs such as blackthorn (hence the lookout's name), hawthorn and dog rose.
The small Wichtelwald playground is located in the immediate vicinity of the lookout.
