The Astronomy Museum of the Sonneberg Observatory presents in its permanent exhibition objects of the universe, starting with the solar system, planets, moons and asteroids to galaxies and guides visitors through the world of stars and constellations. The overview collection of meteorites provides a look back into the formation of the solar system and at rocks from other planets in the solar system.

The exhibition provides insights into the scientific work of Sonneberg astronomers and shows many interesting exhibits from the past of the observatory and astronomy, from the GDR television telescope to photoelectric photometry.

With about 275,000 photographic plates, Sonneberg Observatory owns the world's second largest collection of astronomical images. Thanks to the digitization of the photographic plates, it is now possible to browse the archive using software and thus search for variable stars yourself. Visitors to the museum can view the famous plate collection as well as the historic telescopes and domes on a guided tour.

Practical astronomy is not neglected either. With several telescopes such as the 60cm Cassegrain telescope, the museum invites you every Saturday to directly observe the sun, moon, planets and the most beautiful objects of the universe.

Every first Monday of the month, the Astronomy Museum auditorium hosts a popular science lecture on current astronomy and space topics.

During astronomical events such as solar and lunar eclipses, the museum also opens its domes and offers a diverse program of supporting events including lectures.
