Denstedt Castle

The guardian on the bike path

On the western outskirts of Denstedt, green meadows and fields line the course of the Ilm river in the valley. Denstedt Castle towers above, its high keep visible from afar. The best view of the castle is on a cycle tour along the Ilm Valley Cycle Path, coming from Apolda or Weimar.

Constant change

The most historic parts of the castle date back to the 13th century. The high, round keep with its baroque onion dome is one of the oldest parts of this listed building. Originally built as a moated castle, the medieval fortifications were converted into a residential castle in 1699 by the barons of Lincker and Lützewick. Room structures, plank ceilings and remnants of Renaissance wall paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved. In particular, the unique massive wooden staircase in the stair tower was built to last for centuries.

Accepted and arrived

After its time as a public estate, the castle is now back in private hands and has been brought back to life as a health and sports park for several years. The owner is highly committed to preserving and making the facility usable without interfering with the castle's historical building stock.
