Lower Kranichfeld Castle
Lower Kranichfeld Castle
The castle with open-air stage for concerts, open-airs and other festivities
The Niederburg is idyllically situated on a spur above the Ilm riverbed on the eastern outskirts of Kranichfeld. It was built around 1147 and had an extraordinarily large outer bailey, a small medieval main castle and several towers as well as large ramparts and moats. It was not until 1906 that it was given its present appearance through extensive reconstruction work.
Concerts, musicals, plays, open airs and festivals for young and old take place in the romantic ambience of the Planhof and the open-air stage. Special highlights include the Dance and Rose Festival and the Sternenklang Festival.
The Schütz eagle and falconry farm is also located on the grounds of Niederburg Castle. During the flight demonstrations, you can experience the speed of the peregrine falcon, the agility of a gyrfalcon, the swooping flights of eagles and the silent flight of an eagle owl.
