St. Vitus Church Hopfgarten

The Protestant village church of St. Vitus is located in Hopfgarten, a district of Grammetal in the Weimarer Land district. The parish belongs to the Niederzimmern parish association in the Weimar church district.

In 1075, a fortified tower was first mentioned on the site of today's church. Around 1286, a large Gothic pointed arch vault was built as an extension, open to the west. A further conversion of the Gothic church is reported from 1738. The current neoclassical nave was built in 1833/34 under the supervision of architect Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray.

The history of the tower remains a paradox to this day. It had an unconventional roof construction: a square was turned into a spiraling hexagon with a bell top, which can still be seen in photos today. Since the restoration work in 1992, however, the tower is once again without a spiral. In the tower basement there is a winter church with a separate organ from around 1854, which was probably made by the Rohlfing company in Osnabrück. The main organ on the second gallery is an almost original work by Johann Friedrich Schulze from Paulinzella. It was built in 1834. Today it has been refurbished and its façade is in the process of being gilded.

The church bells were cast by the Grassmayr company in Insbruck in 2019. In 2020, they replaced the existing cast iron bells and were lifted into a new belfry. The designs for the bell decorations were created by local artist Fanja Bachmann-Godejohann. One of the bells beautifully depicts the church with its twisted spire.
