Höhnsches Haus Saalfeld
Höhnsches Haus Saalfeld
"Pax intrantibus, salus exeuntibus" - "Peace on entering, good fortune on leaving", reads the inscription on the portal of the "Höhnschen Haus". The building on the corner of Saalstraße and Saumarkt impressively demonstrates the taste of the early 17th century. Both basement floors embody the typical Renaissance character, in particular through the remarkable Renaissance façade.
The patrician house, which was built in 1609, housed the Electoral Saxon post office in the 18th century. There was a weekly mail coach service for passengers and freight. By 1707 at the latest, when there was a mounted post from Suhl via Schleusingen and Ilmenau to here, Saalfeld had established itself as an important transportation hub. A fire in 1911 caused severe damage to the house and outbuildings. The surviving façade was later extended by an upper storey and given a reconstructed dwarf house gable.
The name "Höhnsches Haus" goes back to the former owner, the merchant Eduard Höhn.
