Luther Church Apolda

The towers of the Luther Church in Apolda are visible from afar in the town center. Situated on the spacious Melanchthonplatz, its architectural style in brick Gothic, which is rarely found in Thuringia, is surprising. Above the entrance, a figure of Philipp Melanchthon welcomes visitors to the church.

Today as on the first day

The historic interior design, which has been preserved unchanged, includes sculptures by masters of their trade known at the time, the paintings on the walls and the stained glass windows. The organ by Wilhelm Sauer with 48 stops on three manuals and pedal is also part of the original furnishings.

Let yourselves be (mis)led

On quiet days, simply speak to the church staff. If you are lucky, you will not only get a first-class guided tour, but you will also be able to look into every corner of the church and learn about the special history of the church. The climb up the tower is steep and dusty. It takes you past the workings of the tower clock and gives you an insight into the old technology. Once you reach the top, you can not only admire the bells, but also enjoy the fantastic view over the city. And don't forget to strike the bells of the carillon in the next room of the gallery yourself. These sounds go through and through.

Encounters

Perhaps you will also hear the story of the opera singer who was lowered through the vaulted ceiling into the main room of the church for his performance with the help of the fire department. Today, the church hosts concerts ranging from classical music to rock, lectures and musical and literary programs, exhibitions and film screenings. The church aims to remove barriers and bring different people together. It wants to encourage people to create and present something together and show that there is a great deal of potential in the region - artistic, intellectual, sporting or "just" human. See for yourself.
