The fortifications around the old town had three gates: the Jakobstor, the Kegeltor and the Frauentor.

The southern city gate, the Frauentor, gave the Marienkapelle its name.

All the gates have undergone structural changes over the centuries, which lasted until the beginning of the 19th century.
