St. John's Church Saalfeld
St. John's Church Saalfeld
The parish church was named after St. John the Baptist. A Romanesque basilica once stood here, which was destroyed by fire. In its place, one of the largest hall churches in Thuringia was built over a period of more than 100 years. It was consecrated in 1514. The builders of Peter Parler from Bohemia succeeded in creating an architecturally impressive masterpiece.
Above the entrance portal you can see the figurative depiction of the Last Judgement. Above the door arch is a very rare image of the "Holy Sorrow".
The interior of the church impresses with an astonishing variety of colors. The choir contains what is probably the church's most beautiful treasure: the paintings on the vaulted ceiling. The "Himmelswiese" is the most extensive ceiling painting depicting plants from the late Gothic period in the German-speaking world. It dates from the 16th century. Over 200 plants can be seen, each with its own healing powers and significance. 80 of them have been botanically identified.
