Marstall Weimar
Marstall Weimar
Once a riding hall, now home to the Thuringian State Archives: the stables are located below the Goethe and Schiller Archives, directly opposite the City Palace. Commissioned by Duke Carl August, the three-winged complex was designed by Ferdinand von Streichhan in the neo-Renaissance style. After the November Revolution in 1918, the building was used by the provisional state government. From 1936, it housed the Gestapo prison. Today, the Thuringian Main State Archive is located here. It contains government files, special documents from scientific institutions and valuable manuscripts.
