The chapel was built after the plague epidemic of 1682/83, in which more than half of the inhabitants died. In their distress, they went in procession to the "Sintefrieden" and vowed to build a chapel at this location and hold processions so that God would take the plague away from them. Even today, this vow is renewed every year.
