Church of St. Mauritius Münchenbernsdorf

The first mention of the church dates back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1260.

The town church, dedicated to St. Mauritius (Moritz), was given its shape by Heinrich von Münch, the former lord of the castle of Münchenbernsdorf. The church, built in Romanesque style and enlarged in late Gothic style, is uniform, stately and beautiful despite some differences. On entering the church, the beautifully carved altar of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary immediately catches the eye.

The church altar was made in 1505 in the workshop of Valentin Lendenstreich and is of great artistic value. It is located in the choir, which was renovated in late Gothic style in 1907. The altar of the Virgin Mary was probably bought by the church patron Simon von Ungnaden in 1556 and bequeathed to the church. Under the altar is a picture of "St. Elisabeth of Thuringia". In the middle of the church is a baptismal font, which is 800 years old and made of sandstone.
