St. Michael's Church Rohr
St. Michael's Church Rohr
St. Michael's Church in Rohr was built between 815 and 824 AD in what was then the border region of the Carolingian Empire as the church of a Benedictine monastery. It later served as a palatine church until the beginning of the 11th century. This makes it the oldest church in Thuringia in terms of its building fabric.
The hall crypt from the 9th century and the fortifications, which are up to six meters high and were successively built up in the late Middle Ages, are remarkable. After the Reformation in the Henneberg region, the church was converted into a Protestant village church. It is still preserved today. The major reconstruction was completed in 1618. Smaller additions followed. The gate tower was also later extended and raised for representative purposes.
