The cone gate was the northeastern gate of the city wall of Weimar. Since the late Middle Ages, it consisted of the inner and outer cone gates, both of which were located on the left bank of the Ilm River north of Hornstein Castle (today's Weimar City Palace). In the course of the defortification of the city in the second half of the 18th century, the gates were demolished. Since there was no longer a military need for a gate, but tolls and cobblestones continued to be collected, an unfortified gatehouse was built as a replacement in 1803, probably according to plans by Heinrich Gentz on the right side of the Ilm directly at the cone bridge.
