Sacrificial bog bailiwick
In the exhibition building and the adjoining outdoor area, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of life and beliefs of our ancestors who settled here from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD. The first finds were discovered during peat cutting and the subsequent excavations from 1957 to 1964 under Prof. Dr. Behm-Blanke. The exhibition has been running since 1992, and finds, replicas and models from the archaeological excavations can be viewed in the exhibition building. A Germanic settlement with typical houses from the 3rd century has been reconstructed in the outdoor area. A circular route leads to 12 shrines from over 1000 years of religious history and sacrificial activity. Many children's groups and school classes visit the directly adjacent activity area every year to practise archery and spear throwing as well as board weaving and ancient Roman and Germanic games. This group supervision is by prior arrangement. Special activity days such as Germanic and Roman festivals and the winter solstice celebration also take place in the outdoor area. This part of the grounds can also be hired privately by appointment.
