St. Mary's Church Wittenberg
St. Mary's Church Wittenberg
St. Mary's Church is the oldest building in Lutherstadt and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The reformer Martin Luther once preached in St. Mary's Church. His pulpit has been preserved to this day and can be admired on loan in the Luther House. He also married his wife Katharina von Bora here and his children were baptized in the church.
Luther's companion Johannes Bugenhagen explained the insights of the Reformation here. The famous painter Lucas Cranach the Elder designed the Reformation altar, which can be admired on a guided tour of the town church. You will also discover valuable panel paintings by Cranach, the ornately decorated baptismal font by Hermann Vischer, the oldest piece in the church, as well as the magnificent organ and the sacristy with contemporary art. As part of the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, the town church of St. Mary's was extensively renovated and now shines in new splendor.
