The Bastille ensemble, consisting of the gatehouse, palace tower and court ladies' house, is the only part of Weimar Palace to have survived all the fires of the Middle Ages and modern times. Johann Sebastian Bach was imprisoned in the Landrichterstube there from November 6 to December 2, 1717, after he had put pressure on the Weimar court to terminate his employment contract. During this time, Bach is said to have continued working on the "Orgelbüchlein" and the first part of the "Well-Tempered Clavier".
