The Schmalkalden community attached great importance to a good education. It was among the five communities in the province of Fulda that had a religious school. However, the search for suitable teachers was often unsuccessful. With the closure of the Talmud schools after the legislation from the Kingdom of Westphalia, the children of the Jewish families attended the citizen schools. Religious instruction took place in the house at Näherstiller Str. 3 until 1869, then in a room of the citizen school. In 1878, 17 children were taught religion. In the house there was also an apartment for the teacher and a mikvah. The mikvah was established in 1890 on the mezzanine floor, probably in place of an earlier one in poor condition. The existence of the mikvah was forgotten, it was rediscovered only in 1995.
