St. Spiritus - Hospitalskirche Bad Tennstedt
St. Spiritus - Hospitalskirche Bad Tennstedt
The Hospital Church "St. Spiritus" (Heilig-Geist-Kirche) is the smallest of the three remaining churches in Bad Tennstedt and is also popularly known as the "Spittelskirche". As its popular name suggests, the church and the adjoining building formed a coherent complex in earlier times. Exactly when the chapel and hospital were founded can only be guessed at. The rededication of the chapel as a church is also not documented. The chapel and hospital are first mentioned in Tennstedt's chronicle in 1506 as a "Leprosorium" or "Hospitalis extra muros" - i.e. a hospital outside the town walls. From the Middle Ages to modern times, people suffering from leprosy were isolated from the rest of the population in a leprosarium. From 1623, the hospital was referred to as the infirmary, which means that wasting patients with particularly dreaded diseases continued to be housed in the complex. Both the hospital and the church were destroyed in the great town fire of 1685. Both were rebuilt. The year 1711 carved into the arch of the west window could indicate the completion of the church. Repairs were made to the ridge turret in 1759 and 1772 and the vault was repaired in 1775. In 1815, the church was used as a military hospital for wounded French soldiers and the entire interior was cleared out for this purpose. In 1817, the church was in very poor condition and the possibility of demolishing and rebuilding it was considered. The interior was redesigned in 1888. From 1919, the Tennstedt town council allowed the church to be used for Catholic services. The rent was 3 marks and was paid into the hospital fund. In the war year 1942, the two bells were needed for armaments purposes and were removed. In 1975, the Erfurt Cathedral Construction Office made a bell cast in 1465 available to the Catholic community. Between 1990 and 1993, the hospital and church were extensively renovated. Over the centuries, the hospital has been used for a variety of purposes. From medieval leprosarium to infirmary, hospital and old people's home to residential use. There are currently plans to use the former hospital as a local history museum in the future. To this day, "St. Spiritus" is still used by the small Catholic community of our town for their devotions.
