The valley with its lush green meadows, peaceful places with wide views and large cooling stands of trees takes its name from the Kirschbach stream, which - as the right tributary of the Lottenbach stream - flows from Obergrunstedt in the direction of Weimar. The unspoiled Weimar Kirschbach Valley is as popular a destination for photographers as it is for families. In the summer months, not only excursionists and amateur athletes can be found here, but also large flocks of sheep graze in the lower valley towards the northeast of the city. Even in Goethe's time, the valley served as a popular motif for ink drawings and watercolors.
