Radome Wasserkuppe
Radome Wasserkuppe
The radome sits majestically on the Wasserkuppe. It is a relic from the Cold War era. From 1945 to 2004, the British, Americans and the German Air Force monitored the airspace from here. The radome is the last of what were once five domes.
Today, the Radom is a landmark and excursion destination on the highest mountain in the Rhön and offers a magnificent view of the land of open distances. The Radom has long since united rather than divided - after all, it is Hesse's highest registry office.
Two exhibitions show the military history of the Wasserkuppe and its role as the "Mountain of Airmen" and the domed room of the cupola offers a unique acoustic experience: a sixteen-fold echo with a delay of up to 1.8 seconds, which the operators use for video and sound presentations.
A tour of the radome is possible during opening hours. Visitors can view the exhibitions, visit the dome with its special acoustics and enjoy the panoramic view from the viewing platform.
