Ice Age Stone Weimar
Ice Age Stone Weimar
A stone block made of grey Upper Lusatian granodiorite with a memorial plaque can be found near the Belvedere parking lot. Between the local music high school and the large park, the bronze plaque shows the area of the former GDR and the course of the southern border of the Scandinavian ice sheet in the Quaternary period. The "Elsterkaltzeit" is said to have reached this point in the Weimar region around 400,000 to 320,000 years ago. The memorial stone was erected in 1976. It is a reminder of the alternating cold and warm periods in the Earth's history.
