Geißlerhaus local history museum
Geißlerhaus local history museum
Modern scientific glass apparatus engineering was founded by Dr. H. Geissler. His invention of the so-called "Geissler tube", the low-pressure gas discharge tube, made him a pioneer of electricity and vacuum technology in physics. On August 4, 1868, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bonn for these achievements.
In addition to the life and work of Dr. Heinrich Geißler, the museum presents the development of local industry, especially the glass industry.
The museum also has unique modern lamp-blown glass pieces by internationally recognized glass designers who were born in Neuhaus am Rennweg and whose exhibits can now be found in museums in the USA, Japan and other countries. These are unique pieces by:
- Albin Schädel (1905 to 1999) - Honorary citizen of Neuhaus/Rwg.
- Kurt Wallstab (1920 to 2002) - Honorary citizen of Neuhaus/Rwg.
- Max Traut (1906 to 1970) - 1st lamp-blown refractory filament glass.
There are also historical witnesses to the town's association and economic history (glass and porcelain production, porcelain painting, box making and forestry history) as well as a sequence of birds living in our region. Historical postcards and equipment from a glass-blowing workshop from earlier times also enrich the small museum in the historic slate house.
The museum also hosts constantly changing exhibitions in the foyer, as well as specialist lectures and literary evenings.
Advance booking for groups required!
