LIFE, MUSIC AND STORIES AROUND BACH'S BAPTISMAL FONT

The town church of St. Georgen stands in the middle of the town. Founded around 1188 by Landgrave Ludwig III, you can see that the church has been rebuilt time and again. Its striking tower was not added until around 1900. St. George's Church welcomes its visitors as a place to be still, to look and marvel, to pray and listen. Works of art allow the eyes to wander.

The magnificent coffins of the Dukes of Eisenach and their family members can be viewed in the tower crypt. The largest and Baptistery of Johann Sebastian Bach probably also the most famous church in Eisenach is full of history: in 1221 Elisabeth of Thuringia trusted. Martin Luther sang here in the Kurrende during his school days and later preached in this church several times - including shortly before his „abduction“ to Wartburg Castle on May 2, 1521. In 1989, it was a starting point for the peaceful revolution in Eisenach.

Members of the Bach family worked as organists in St. George's Church for over 100 years. And Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized here on 23 March 1685. The baptismal font still attracts many musicians today. The acoustics of the church interior are a special treat for the ears. And so the church comes to life during Sunday services and in more than 100 concerts every year.

Since 2017, the Evangelical Lutheran parish has always hosted the Eisenach Bach Festival around Reformation Day.
