St. Ursula - Lindig

The small church in the middle of the village is probably one of the youngest in the Kahla area. The current building was only constructed between 1733 and 1735. However, there is mention of a church in the small village as early as 1506. A missal from the year 1486 documents this with the words

"... zcu blintic in the church of sandt ursulen"

The new building was constructed because the old church had simply become too small. A special feature of the old church was that the pulpit was placed behind the altar.

The church's first bell dates back to 1586 and another was added in 1636. In the course of the new building, however, even the bells were recast by the Apolda bell foundry in 1867. The baptismal font was also replaced with a new one.

The church received its organ as early as 1742, built by the local organ builder Justinus Ehrenfried Gerhard. Just 21 years later, it was renovated by his grandson Johann Christian Adam Gerhard.

The relatively unadorned interior of the church was enhanced in 1907 with a painting of Christ on the pulpit and a landscape depiction on the organ loft.

Unfortunately, the great wars of the 20th century did not stop at the small church in the tranquil Saale valley. The church's bronze bells were melted down and used for weapons production. The tower and windows also suffered considerable damage. To make matters worse, lightning struck the church tower on July 17, 1976. The resulting damage could only be completely repaired 8 years later.

After the reunification of Germany, however, things started to look up again for the little church. In 1991, it was given a new tiled roof and the tower a new slate covering. The church clock was overhauled in 1996 and the nave ceiling was replastered in 1999. The last comprehensive renovation of the church interior took place between 2001 and 2006, and the restored organ was rededicated in 2010.

When the Reformation arrived in the region in the 16th century, Löbschütz and Lindig formed their own parish. A little later, however, in 1537, they were assigned to a branch of the town of Kahla.

In the churchyard there are three simple wooden crosses over the graves of German soldiers who died on April 8, 12 and 15, 1945.
