The "Historic Slate Mining Lehesten" technical monument was opened in 1993 after extensive reconstruction of the historic buildings in a slate mine that was closed in 1964. Nestled in a nature reserve, visitors can learn all about the formation, extraction, mining and processing of the valuable slate rock from expert museum guides. The artistic work of the roofers is impressively displayed in a lovingly designed "model village". Unique sights include the gin shaft built in 1845, the double-split hut from 1898 and the surface "Shaft IV" facility from 1961 (still under museum construction). In addition, two geological trails (4 km and 800 m) invite you to hike along the 42 m deep "Schiefersee" through a charming post-mining landscape.

The grounds of the technical monument, including the model village, can be visited independently. However, access to the galley and splitting hut is only possible as part of a guided tour with our museum guides. During the daily guided tours, the battering rams are also open for parking right next to the ticket office in the crew hut.
