Rauschwitz

Rauschwitz is a municipality in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia. Rauschwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1230 and today includes the districts of Rauschwitz, Döllschütz, Karsdorfberg, Pretschwitz and Schmörschwitz. The flat, eastward sloping valley of the Wethau, in which the municipal area lies approximately in the middle, is also called the Abbey named. The naming of the landscape refers to the former Benedictine monastery in about 8 km away Thalbürgel, to whose possession the area of the abbey with its villages belonged in the Middle Ages. The Romanesque church still preserved today St. Mary and St. George in Thalbürgel is one of the most important sacred architectural monuments in Thuringia and contains the remains of the only Benedictine staggered choir in Germany. With its excellent acoustics, the church serves as a concert hall for the Thalbürgel church summer.

The village Rauschwitz is a good starting point for the northwestern located Tautenburg Forest and the Eisenberg Mill Valley and for trips to Eisenberg and Bad Klosterlausnitz.

The Rauschwitz wood artist Christian Schmidt has been inviting colleagues to international chainsaw artist symposia in his community since 2016. The sculpture by Ricardo Villacis from Ecuador stands by the village pond.
