Niederdorla
Niederdorla
Niederdorla is located about 7 km from Hainich in the direction of Mühlhausen. The village, which belongs to the bailiwick, has about 1500 inhabitants and was first mentioned in a document in 1223. Worth seeing in the village are the church, the "Fickentor", one of the last well-preserved village gates in Thuringia and the village green.
Niederdorla is located directly at the Seebach Dam, where people like to surf and where one of Thuringia's largest motorcycle meetings takes place every summer. Near Niederdorla is the geographical center of Germany, which was determined in 1991. At this place there is a stone table and the center lime tree.
In the open-air museum Opfermoor, a Germanic settlement has been reconstructed. The original remains of it and of Germanic sacrificial cults had been found during peat cutting work. In Niederdorla the traditional Whitsun and funfair festivals are celebrated, as well as a midpoint festival and the biker meeting.
