Luther Monument Erfurt
Luther Monument Erfurt
The Erfurt Luther Monument is located on the northern side of the Angers. The imposing bronze statue shows the reformer with an open Bible in his hand.
The location was not chosen without reason. On the one hand, the six-metre-high monument on the lively and central Anger reflects the great importance of the reformer in Erfurt. In addition, Luther gave an important sermon in the neighboring Kaufmannskirche church in October 1522, which he used to settle disputes among his followers.
The Luther memorial was designed by Fritz Schaper, professor at the Berlin Academy of Art. It was dedicated in 1889 and the Bible verse "I shall not die, but live" adorns its front. Around the plinth are three reliefs depicting the formative stages of Luther's time in Erfurt: his studies at the Collegium Maius, his entry into the Augustinian monastery and his journey to Worms.
