Neustadt an der Orla

Neustadt is picturesquely situated in the eastern Saaleland. The town center is surrounded by gentle wooded hills and offers exceptional sights around the medieval, listed town center. In particular, the harmonious ensemble of the spacious market square with the late Gothic town hall leaves a lasting impression. The Neustadt Luther House is also located on the market square, just one of the testimonies to the economic prosperity that the citizens of Neustadt enjoyed in the cloth-making and tanning trades in the Middle Ages. Today, the accessible monument houses a modern permanent exhibition as well as the tourist information office and is therefore the point of contact for all visitors. The historic butchers' benches, which were built as a medieval street of stores for the butcher's trade, are within direct sight. Visitors can admire one of the town's most valuable treasures in the town church of St. Johannis: Here stands an altar from the workshop of Lucas Cranach, the only one still standing today in the place for which it was intended 500 years ago. Knights once lived in the Knau district and even today you can follow in the footsteps of the Freemasons in the park of the manor. The settlements in Arnshaugk and Neunhofen, on the other hand, tell the oldest stories of the entire Orla Valley with their historic buildings. The castle chapel in Arnshaugk and the thousand-year-old village church in Neunhofen, for example, bear witness to this. In addition to the cultural features, the surrounding nature offers a great backdrop for hikes and cycle tours along the former trade route "Hohe Straße", to the Bismarck Tower or in the "Land of a Thousand Ponds", a nature reserve that is not only characterized by its scenic beauty, but also by its rich variety of native wildlife. The Kleinaer Höhe in the south of the village, with an altitude of 531 m above sea level, offers a wonderful view over the Orlasenke, the Dreba valley to the beginning of the Schiefergebirge and the Saalfelder Höhen.
