Chinese cottage in Altenstein Castle Park
Chinese cottage in Altenstein Castle Park
Today, the Chinese Cottage forms a single unit with the steeply rising Hollow Stone on which it was built in 1798. Before it was built, 33 steps were first cut into the rock and the top was leveled. Opposite the entrance to the cottage, a semi-circular bench was carved out of the rock. Larches, Weymouth pines and maple trees were planted around the hollow stone. They were intended to lend the entire ambience a romantic atmosphere. The "Chinese Cottage" is a small wooden house covered with slate. Following the Chinese model, it has a protruding, curved roof. Hanging from the edge of the roof are 24 colored glass bells with clappers. When the wind moves them, they ring softly. The chinoise building is a landmark visible from afar and a symbol of the artistically designed Altenstein plateau. After the end of the First World War, and with it the Duchy, the small building began to fall into disrepair. It was finally demolished in 1923 and could only be restored in 2011. The basis for its faithful reconstruction were historical photographs and measurements as well as local findings such as steps, traces of anchoring and remnants of the slate cladding.
